Armenian Population in Glendale
Glendale hosts the second largest Armenian population in the United States; Los Angeles being the first. It has the highest percentage of residents of Armenian descent--most have arrived in the City within the past two decades. The U.S. Census does not inquire about Armenian ancestry, therefore an exact population count is difficult to determine. It is known, however, that about 40% of the students in the Glendale Unified School District are Armenian. With a total population of nearly 205,000, this equates to roughly 80,000 Armenian residents.
Family ties, church and school are the pillars of Glendale’s expanding and close-knit Armenian-American community. Armenians have settled in Glendale for more than half a century bringing with them traditions from Armenia, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt and the former Soviet Union. Armenian-Americans play an active social and City government role, this illustrating the concrete connection and trust that has been built between the City and its Armenian residents. The City of Glendale provides numerous resources for its Armenian-American population, as well as for other ethnic community members including private and public schooling, libraries, parks, homes for the elderly, recreational centers, community centers, hospitals and more.
